ESI & Data Hosting

DLS Discovery has invested in technology and people to bring together flexible solutions and an experienced team for handling Electronically Stored Information. DLS offers solutions and guidance through the entirety of the EDRM life-cycle, navigating the path from volume to relevance.

Both companies and individuals today create Electronically Stored Information in their normal course of business. The scope of media containing ESI expands beyond custodians' PCs including: portable hard drive and USB devices, cloud storage, company and private email accounts, mobile devices, and backup copies. A gigabyte of data (about 1/16th of common USB flash drive), contains around 10,000 documents. Combine the number of possible devices, raw volume of content, and number of custodians involved in litigation and your team may easily find itself with over a million records to review or produce.

DLS' process starts at consulting with your team and custodians to identify what information and devices are relevant. DLS provides the path forward through preservation and ESI processing to lower the cost and difficulty of handling ESI, as well as reduce the risks created by mismanagement of electronic evidence.

Data Collection
Matters with ESI require the need for data integrity and preservation. DLS' experience in data collection includes Exchange Server, company-wide network shares, mobile devices, home PCs, and 'cloud' data such as hosted email and popular file-sharing sites. DLS offers consulting and actions for data collection including:

  • Legal hold notification and tracking
  • Forensic Imaging
  • Remote collections
  • Unix/Linux volume support
  • Exchange server and EDB extraction
  • Cloud storage and hosting
  • Mobile devices
  • Data replication

Data Forensics
Data Forensics includes the collection of data to preserve document and file-system metadata, the restoration of preserved data for EDiscovery processing, and anaylsis of data to extract important meta-data such as the deleted date or the account used to create a file. Commonly, EDiscovery for litigation first turns to persistent data, which is data currently available on a file-system or device. In addition to persistent data, DLS can help your team retrieve and analyze volatile data, which may have been deleted or partially over-written.

Early Case Assessment

From the start of your case, DLS Discovery is available to help your team identify possible data-sources and preservation techniques, as well as the best processing approaches.

Growing along with the mass-storage achievements of the IT industry, data-collection and preservation more and more often results in hundreds of gigabytes through terabytes of custodian and/or company data and email for EDiscovery. Early Case Assessment is an approach to quickly cull out undesirable data and duplicates, minimizing cost and volume of data to be reviewed. The preservation of original data allows for ECA specifications to change without the need to re-visit a project entirely. DLS Discovery offers ECA through multiple approaches including:

  • Relativity Analytics
  • De-duplication, date-filtering, and file-type filtering for EDiscovery

Electronic Data Discovery
Electronic Data Discovery is the process of culling and searching to identify relevant records in a matter's collected data, converting a handful of electronic files to a commonly viewable format for review or production, or producing the contents of a custodian's hard drive in it's original format. EDiscovery with DLS Discovery assists your team and case in identifying and reviewing Electronically Stored Information for relevance and privilege coming from sources including forensic images, PST, NSF, or MBOX files, or loose files copied to a USB device. In the handling of ESI, EDiscovery is the stage of processing, review, and analysis of data for production. DLS offers experience in EDiscovery processing for platforms including hosted solutions, Summation, IPRO, Lexis Nexis' Concordance and FYI, Ringtail, Adobe, and our own in-house solution.

Hosted Discovery and Review

An always growing need for security, data redundancy, and file-storage sizes, translates to a high and continuous cost for keeping your EDiscovery in-house. DLS offers a variety of hosting solutions and our own in-house solution. Hosting EDiscovery through DLS reduces both your cost and turn-around time from the collection of data to production. As well, keeping your data under one roof ensures all incoming and outgoing data is tracked and properly backed up for full, secure, redundancy.

DLS Discovery offers Relativity Analytics with no additional per GB processing fees. Structured analytics features may be used to reduce the review of repeated content such as emails in a thread or nearly duplicative files, and conceptual analytics features will help organize data so you can make sense of, and prioritize, your records.

Project Management and Consulting
DLS Discovery's project managers work closely with our technicians and clients on every matter handled from data collections and forensics, to data hosting and production. Thier goal in working with your team is to provide accurate details and tracking for each stage of any given project, ensuring consistency and full-disclosure and tracking of all milestones and hurdles. Project management through DLS is included with all DLS Discovery ESI solutions and includes tracking and QC of all work product and process.
